One of my friends asked me why we didn’t do a lot of landscaping on the Ash House, to increase the curb appeal. While the exterior of the home looks fabulous, it’s true that there are still some vines in trees, there’s not much grass in the back yard, and there’s an old greenhouse back there, too.
That’s a legitimate point. Of course, if you saw the house before we got it, you’d realize there has been a LOT of landscape work done. Many trees were removed, the ashes from the fireplace were removed, drainage was tweaked, and hundreds of bamboo plants were eliminated (honestly, just mowed down–it’s going to take a lot of mowing to deal with the bamboo). You literally couldn’t walk in most of the back yard tanks to ivy, bamboo and other debris, and there were hundreds of pots that used to hold plants scattered all over the grounds. At least a potential buyer can now see the potential.
And that’s on purpose. We decided not to put in a new patio, a pool, or extensive plantings, because we want to leave the options open to new buyers. We did put in some really pretty bougainvillea by the entrance. Lee has been faithfully watering it, since we’re in the typical summer drought and incredible heat period known as “July and August in Texas.” But the potential of this huge, shady yard is really unlimited. We’ve talked more than once about all the stuff we could do with that yard if we lived there…potential buyers will see that, too. Or they will see that all they have to to is mow and it will be just fine as it is.
Secretly there’s another reason that there is a lot of ivy and the old greenhouse still in the back. The workers discovered a mating pair of green herons in the big tree by the greenhouse. They didn’t want to disturb the nest! Those are among our favorite birds, so we certainly weren’t going to disturb them. The neighborhood is full of interesting and rare birds, too. There’s a resident hawk you hear often, a lot of woodpeckers, and backyard chickens, for example.
We’ll miss this house once it sells. And it IS on the market now, just not showing up in listings yet! Call us if you are in Temple and want a showing!
