While the Meadow Arbor project is making its way toward the finish line over in San Antonio, Sue Ann and Lee’s business, Hermits’ Rest Enterprises, is planning to start its next renovation, the house just to the north of the Cameron offices. Today we’re sharing some of the “before” pictures on that one, just so it will be clear where we are starting! The renovation begins this week.
This is an old (20s or 30s) pier-and-beam house on a main road. It has two bedrooms and one bathroom, and a cozy living/dining area. It has a screened-in front porch that will stay, but the collapsing afterthought back porch must go! Next to the house is a large, but crumbling, garage and former laundry area, which also may be history.
What we hope to do with the house is remove the wall that forms a hallway connecting the two bedrooms and bathroom. This will make the living area much larger and more open concept, which even in small town USA, people love. It turns out the wall is load bearing, but won’t be too hard at all to remove and replace with a beam.
There are also two doors in each bedroom, leaving not much space for beds and dressers. Once the hallway is gone, we can also remove the extra doors. When the master bedroom is down to one door, it will also make for more cabinet space in the kitchen, which will be great, since it already has the washer and dryer in it.
The house has some cool features that we hope to keep, like shiplap in the closets, built-in drawers in the master bedroom, and a large kitchen. We’ve asked our contractor, Ricky Mora, to get rid of the wall between the kitchen and living area, replace it with a peninsula or island. That will look so modern! And we have to get new cabinets and counters, because the old ones aren’t cool and retro, but instead are in disrepair.
On the other hand, this isn’t a house you’d fix up to be a showplace, so we are not going crazy on it. Still, for security, we are removing a door that leads out from the master bedroom. It didn’t go anywhere.
As work goes on, we’ll share the progress. It should be another fairly quick one, though.
