I don’t imagine this information will do much good for people in humid Houston, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, whose homes were flooded and are now being ravaged by mold. Still, with Austin being the allergy capitol of Texas, we have to come up with ways to combat allergens in the house. After all, a person can only take so much anti-histamines and decongestants.
One method we’ve found is to run an essential oil diffuser at night. I researched which oil blends had the greatest impact on allergies, and then balanced that against what we could tolerate aesthetically. The recipe we settled on is this:
- 5 drops Lavender oil
- 4 drops Peppermint oil
- 3 drops Eucalyptus oil
- 2 drops Clove oil
- 2 drops Red Thyme
It’s the Red Thyme and Eucalyptus that give it that slight medicinal smell. If we leave those out, we can use it as a basic air freshener, as well.
