Oh the beginning can sometimes be dark and mysterious. It doesn’t have to be. We have the technology to make it not dark. Oh yes we do!
New light fixtures in the church are an absolute must! There were some fluorescent fixtures in the basement that had scary wires to say the least. Once the drop ceiling came off and we could see, it didn’t take long to realize we had to replace these old fixtures, quick and in a hurry!

They worked with all the power in the building off, and brought in their own lights to see with. There’s the kitchen light that I use to make coffee with. I heard a rumor that Lee wanted it there because I am mean without coffee. He might be right.
So we called in David and Kim. I ordered and received new lights, and away Dave and Kim went! Until they hit a snag. Then they got going, hit a snag, then got going, etc.
This is just a really old church. When we start digging into the “meat” of the plumbing, electrical, and so on, we are seeing an outdated system. It was probably quite modern and safe when first installed, but years have taken their toll on the work that was done. We know just by counting the (small) number of outlets that it is outdated, most likely at least a decade, maybe two.
It is apparent that over the years, several people have stepped in to keep this place going with whatever expertise and resources that were available. It has truly been a labor of love for the past congregations, who we thank for doing their absolute best to keep this church going! We have it from here, and it is a labor of love for us as well. We promise to take care of her.
Personification of the building?
Well, yes. It’s easier to be polite to a building if it has some personality. This place sure does. With the addition of the new light fixtures, David and Kim working hard to get the wires tied up and on the ceiling where they belong instead of hanging down in our faces, we are now able to SEE this personality.
While it is sort of funny that the old nursery with a bunny and teddy bears was picked out as my temporary office for me by Lee, this room is actually quite cheerful to me. It is brightly colored and it has an innocence and fun vibe to it. Maybe I’ll just stay here. Leave the nursery original… I think I’ll be out voted. This room needs a good makeover for safety like the rest of the place.

It’s easy to see my really cool file cabinet next to my office door that holds some of my stuff with all this light in here!

Nobody is surprised to see pictures on my door, my name on my door, or even the memes that are beginning to appear there. It’s how I try and keep morale up. Even if it just for me. Lee and Sue Ann usually laugh too though.
Safety first!
That is what is the main motivator of getting these things squared away. We are not into the real renovations yet, just making it safe for day-to-day operations. We pull way more electricity in a day than I’m sure was pulled in a month before we came. We have to be responsible and recognize that.
The new fixtures are sure putting out a lot of good light! We do solar and battery operated things when we can, but if we have to use electricity we do our best to use bulbs that are more energy efficient.
I also keep us on the TXU Energy Green Up plans on our houses and office. You can read all about that by clicking those underlined words. We Hermits do what we can to keep our world as green as possible. Even if we do spend most of our time indoors being, well hermits.
