This weekend, our Directors (me, Lee, Carol, and Russell) had our annual retreat, which is required for LLCs. That means we’ve been in business four years! Dang!
Our goal was to do something fun but not too far from where we lived. So, I used some of our vacation points and booked a two-bedroom condo in Lago Vista (not far from our Lakeland house, which we checked on and were happy to see it is gorgeous). It was not a fancy place (Lee will share about some interesting choices its owners have made in another post), but it had space, peace and quiet, and a LOT of extremely tame deer (see my personal blog post on that).
Our goal at the meeting was twofold: first, we just wanted to spend some time relaxing together as a team. Most of the time, when we talk, there is some goal, or there is some time constraint, and we don’t talk much about our lives, and we don’t get time to have extended conversations on topics that matter to us. Plus, we wanted to have fun together.
Second, we have been growing dissatisfied with the “house flipping” model, especially in the area where we are working, so we wanted to discuss the possibility of going in a new direction. We were open to anything and everything, but eventually I made a suggestion that resonated with the group. We will be talking more and more about that in upcoming blog posts, since we are quite the transparent bunch.
Mostly we had fun, though. We ate at the Gnarly Gar, a floating restaurant on Lake Travis that is beloved by residents and boaters. The lake is down a bit, but there is still plenty of water, thank goodness. The catfish and carp were swirling away hoping for food, as usual. They have some BIG fish in that lake. And our “team building” activity was antique shopping. Some of us really like that. I got office decor (pink and orange glass, one hand blown).
And after our meeting, we celebrated making our decision to move forward with the business, but in a new direction, with a lovely dinner at a local Italian restaurant. We had to bring our own liquor, but since Lee had picked up two bottles of a nice champagne, we were set.
Yesterday we had some great conversation and then made serious plans about the research we will need to do to start our new direction. Carol also figured out a way to keep moving forward looking for homes to work on, while still trying something new, so we were all satisfied and happy with our kanban boards and other accountability measures. The best part to ME was not having 8 am phone calls anymore. We are doing longer weekly calls, plus in-person meetings every month. We decided we do better when we can talk face to face.
And to top it all off, we looked at a lot of houses for sale, from starter homes to probably the most beautiful house we’ve ever been in (seriously considered selling everything to move there…but we won’t.
We are excited about the future, well rested, and energized about what we are planning to do. It will solidify as we do the research, so it should be fun!
We hope you continue to join us on our Hermit Haus Redevelopment journey. Questions? We are still at 512-807-8777!
